Emily Hanigan (b. 1987, Boise, ID) is an artist based in Idaho. Her paintings explore themes of home, belonging, and our connection to the natural world.

 

Hanigan creates mixed media works across a variety of substrates, including wood panels, canvas, and paper. Her process includes experimenting with a variety of mediums and materials, including acrylic, ink, charcoal, graphite, wood scraps, and found paper or fabric. You might also find her cutting up some of her paper or canvas paintings to create entirely new pieces. Working in her home studio, she lets the mood of the moment guide each mark made. Often creating several layers within one piece, Hanigan gives herself the freedom to explore questions related to home, belonging, and the natural world. She invites viewers into her inner world, sparking curiosity and offering a space where they can remain present and explore their own imaginations.

 

Biography

Emily Hanigan received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Secondary Art Education in 2011 from Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, where she studied photography, art education, and painting. She worked as a Photojournalist for The Oregon Coast Today in 2008, and was a member of Swell Artist Collective in Boise, Idaho from 2017-2020.

Hanigan won two photography awards through the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) for her work at The Oregon Coast Today in 2008, and in 2017 won an award through Studio Boise Photography Center for her piece titled City of Geese.
